Do you think I'd be wasting my time and everyone else's if I hadn't tried it? Don't insult somebody who's willing to spend time trying to help you fix something that doesn't work the way it claims.
It used to work - if you call taking 15 to 20 seconds to read the root folder, and then another 10 to read even a small subfolder, and then taking the same 15 to 20 seconds again the next time you try to read the root folder "working". But now it won't even do that. The only choice I get on the menu is "Play Random Song".

Lestrad,
I'm a user like you trying to help others where I can.
Mine works FINE on a WinXP install, quite snappy, a mere one second to access any folder within My Music > Music Folder.
Try running your SBS on a real computer, you may find the results much more pleasurable. ![]()

I decided to run a ReadyNAS with the Touch BECAUSE I didn't want to have to run a "real" computer to listen to music over the home stereo AND BECAUSE Logitech's marketing hype says that the Netgear ReadyNAS line are the only ones they officially support - which I took to mean I might at least expect some kind of decent performance from the Touch + ReadyNAS NV+ setup. Unfortunately the performance is abysmally poor, as described. To improve it, I've done two things: 1) order a memory upgrade, and 2) install version 7.6.1 of Squeezebox Server.
I'm waiting for the memory to be shipped. As for the SBS upgrade, which is supposed to provide faster performance on underpowered servers, I've tried five versions of 7.61. so far and not one can complete a scan of my music collection - not even 1%. I'm now talking to Logitech support about that.
If you have any other suggestions other than "get a real computer", I'd like to hear them. Given my situation (and as the Native Americans tell us, we should never judge a man until we have walked for many moons in his mocassins), having even a MicroATX computer dedicated just to listening to music seems stupid to me. Having a NAS that serves as backup plus media server seemed like a perfect solution...

The added memory should help. A NAS is simply an underpowered computer and is designed for storage (hence why it is called Networked Attached Storage). As soon as you bog down any underpowered computer with a resource intensive program like a media server you have to expect issues. SBS is even more of a resource hog because it is far more capable than many other media servers out there.
My SBS runs on a laptop tucked away in a drawer. The laptop serves several purposes beyond just SBS server. In sleep mode it likely draws not much more power than your NAS. Like anything, you get what you pay for. If you buy underpowered equipment to save on hardware & operating costs then you pay dearly in loss of performance. Buying more powerful equipment means you pay more up front & in operating costs, but you save LOTS of headaches over the life & usage of that product. ![]()
I'm all for saving polar bears through lower energy consumption, but then I must also live my life to the fullest. NAS devices will always come with performance restrictions I'm not willing to put up with, other than what they were designed to do, and that is simple storage. Obviously others are willing to put up with such limitations. To each his own I guess. ![]()

I almost spit out my coffee when I read this post this morning. Squeezeit is one of the most helpful posters on this and the other slimdevices forum. I've seen the evidence of him helping literally hundreds of people solve their problems. And he does all this just to be helpful to other squeezebox users. And more importantly, In hundreds of posts, Squeezeit maintains a calm, helpful manner, no matter how abusive others might get. Others could benefit from adopting Squeezeit's "Attitude".
This doesn't add anything to this thread and I'm just venting but I couldn't help myself. ;-)

If you ever have weird issues with your NAS devices you can also go to the Third party forums as on there more people who do very custom setups then the ones we support.

Apologies to all who need them. The only reason I'm letting my choler show is that I want others who may be about to make the mistake I made - buying a ReadyNAS for use with a Squeezebox Touch after being assured by Logitech's propaganda that it would work just fine and "free my music", only to find out that it performs extremely poorly - to benefit from my experience. ANd I'd like to thank Squeezeit for his contribution to possible helping those people out.
Meanwhile, as further proof of Logitech's inability to actually provide solutions (as opposed to promising them), the Release Candidate of Squeezebox Server 7.6.1 (16 months in development, it seems) is out and it too is incapable of scanning my music collection.

7.6.1 is a beta version that has just started to be worked on since the release of 7.6.0.
It is also a beta and not an offical release yet.
If you are having problems with 7.6.1 then go back to an earlier version that worked for you such as 7.5.4.
Also if it is with iTunes some people have found the the music folder that is being pointed out adds an extra /music to it. Check these out as well.

Actually I'm currently running Release Candidate 1. Not a beta version.

And, just to make you feel even better :-
"We'll do an RC2, since the first one had a few serious bugs."
Fun this, isn't it ?
