thank you for your reply. i should have said up front that this squeezebox is ultimatly going in my car. that's why i want a NAS. it's simpler, smaller, will power up when the car starts as will the SBT. i don't want anything i have to physically start up as it will be in the trunk (the NAS & SBT) along with some other things to include a DAC (emotiva XDA-1), a 150w dc/ac power invertor and a wireless N router with a secure wi-fi network setup so i can control the SBT with a cheap android 7" tablet from inside the cab of the car.
i've done a test with just the SBT, a USB drive, USB powered hub & an iPad 2 with the SBT spdif out to a cheapo 192/24 DAC and from the DAC into the car receiver and it sounds amazing. better than i could have dreamed!
so a NAS that supports SBS is all i'm looking for. sorry if i didnt' make that clear. a PC in the trunk would be too much of a hassle and heavy on the power. too bad the SBT won't run off of a DLNA NAS or i'd be in business cause there are tons of them!

yep, only 1 in a million are asking about installing in a car! ;-)
first, don't assume a PC is high power user or physically large. a FitPCi is the size of a paperback book and can run win7, linux, etc. Or something like a sheevaplug (with squeezeplug) works well with running LMS. It is the size of about two packs of cigaretters. See these links:

And my first step if I wanted to use in a car would be to simply create a mirror of all my FLAC files as mp3 files (less space), copy them onto a USB drive, connect the USB drive to the SB TOUCH, and use the "TinyLMS" inside the TOUCH to serve the music from the USB drive. This *can* work with the right USB drive, and if it does, it removes the need for a NAS or computer all together. My brother (in his house) uses a TOUCH with a USB drive connected containing about 50,000 mp3 files. Rock solid for several years now....

thank you garymc. i'm using a 1tb USB 3.0/2.0 drive and it's working very good, just slow when navagating the menus. if it looks like it's working out i'll just stick with that. it's also slow because i am using full size files in their native form, i.e. FLAC up to 192/24, WMALL, iTunes & MP3. i'd prefer to keep them that way and their current size. so, for right now, i'll stick with the USB drive. i can deal with the slow navagating speed to keep it simple. everything sounds incredible right now in the car.
i'm gonna put a nice stand in the trunk with some good shock absorbing feet and materials for the gear. so far, i've been running it for a couple good hours with no problems from off of the USB drive controlling it with the squeeze pad app and man that thing is great. it's connected (the SBT) to my gigabit network via cat6 in the house and the iPad2 is connected via our secured WAP and it works great. i will set up a similar setup in the car but using a wi-fi router.
i'll keep you guys posted.

i've been running my SBT & USB drive for 6 hrs with the random song feature and it's not had one issue. i am using the app for hi-rez 192/24 spdif out and thus far it's been rock solid. the squeezepad app is incredible, so far, no problems with it either. i've got a real winner on my hands with this thing. glad i purchased it. ![]()

Yes, it is a very nice setup. I've got two homes filled with this stuff as whole-house systems. I find the SqueezeBox system to be the best network music player available in terms of quality and flexibility of anything on the market, including Sonos (which won't easily handle the size of my library or play 24/96 files). And I'd be happy to pay many times the cost of a SB system for something that was better. But there is nothing better I've been able to find at *any* price. Quite a deal I'd say....

for the setup i'm gonna do in the house, i will probably buy and setup a dedicated ReadyNAS for the house because i want it to be quicker and it's a reasonable thing to do for in the house. i'll install a 2tb 7200rpm SATA drive (single) for it and that will be for the SBT only. i already have a WD NAS for the families use throughout the house for video, pictures, data and music. this NAS will be just for the this setup below:
2tb Ready NAS with SBS running to cat6 gb network
SBT to NAS with cat6 gb network
SBT to (soon to be released) emotiva XDA-2 DAC 192/24 via spdif (possibly USB)
XDA-2 to Onkyo 5507 pre-amp via XLR to XLR
iPad 2 (soon to be replaced with the new iPad) controlling SBT via Squeeze Pad app!
September is going to be my month. finally getting to play all my hi-rez audio without having to always turn on the oppo 93 to do it. don't get me wrong, i love the oppo 93, just want to use it for movies, SACD & DVD-a use only.

not sure which is which anymore, but just be sure to get one of the readynas units that is based on x86 architechure. then it will be very fast and able for browsing and streaming FLAC files, etc. to several SB players.

Ultra 2: Intel Atom single-core (this is the one i'm going with)
Ultra 2 Plus: Intel Atom dual-core (this one is a bit over 250.oo more than the one i'm getting)
both have 1gb of system ram and each CPU is 1.66ghz for each NAS. for me, in my house with realistically the potential for only 2 SBT to be used at any one time (probably by me) so to save money for other things, i thing the single core option is plenty for me.
thank you for all of your help and advice. i'll keep you posted on how things turn out!
