G940 Opinions

Hello, first off I would like to say Logitech makes amazing products. Good quality, and great support!

Secondly, I would like to ask the owners of the G940 with atleast 5 hours flight time to give me there opinion. I recently purchased the G940, with the Digital Precision Gaming Headset. How does the G940 compair to competitors? I done many hours of research, and found that there is a lot of nonsense problems that involve incorrect calibaration. People who successfully calibrated it loved it. How is the Force Feedback?..etc I'm very excited to receive and try this out. If I'm not satisfied with it, I'll send it back for a refund.

The videos, and reviews I saw from all over the website is great, there's promsiing results for this. Thank you!

Re: G940 Opinions

I would also like to add I will be using this only for Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Thanks!

Re: G940 Opinions

Was that 5 hours of REAL flight time or just 5 hours with the G940?

Besides my G940, I also have an Evenstrain modified Thrustmaster Cougar. I replaced the pot in my cougars throttle with a hall effect device (bought from Cub Pilot). For rudder pedals I have a Thrustmaster RCS.

The Evenstrain Cougar has a very light feel with fantastic centering and a smooth hall effect output. With the force centering dialed back, the G940 feels slightly stiffer. The G940s current centering isn't even close to that of an Evenstrain Cougar. But compared to an unmodified Cougar, the G940 is much easier to use. One of the biggest drawbacks to a Cougar are the stiff centering springs. Also, the Cougar does not have force feedback.

I should note that as far as I know the Evenstrain mod is no longer available, also it was not cheap.

Throttle wise, the G940 and Cougar throttles feel similar.

The G940 rudder pedals have toe brakes and the Thrustmaster RCS does not. Also, the RCS pedals are further apart.

Perhaps the biggest difference is in the software; the Cougar is fairly mature and enjoys third party software support. If you are curious, check out Foxy by James Hallows. (Maybe G940Mark ought to contact James Hallows?)

So far, I've used my G940 with DCS Black Shark, Egosofts X3 Terran Conflict, X-Plane, and the FSX demo. I have to say that I like the G940 for the force feedback and its functionality. The button layout is nice and the controls fit my hands. Speaking of buttons, I really like the eight lighted buttons on the G940 throttle.

Of the above games, I think that FSX makes the best use of the G940s force feedback. Also, I have not yet had any calibration related issues.

Bottom line? I am keeping my G940. I'll probaly move my Cougar over to my backup PC.

Re: G940 Opinions

Thank you for your reply. I believe the G940 is going to be a new road for Flight Simulation. With research I did, the calibration software needs some fixing, and fiddleing around with. But the hardware sounds to be good. Thank you for your reply.

Re: G940 Opinions

[ Edited ]

I'm something of a Logitech fan, our house has three Squeezeboxes, several Harmony remotes, and an assortment of mice and keyboards.  My previous HOTAS was an old Saitek X36 which, in turn, had replaced an even older gameport Microsoft Force Feedback Pro.  My feelings on the G940 (after well more than 5 hours) are mixed.  The hardware comes across as pretty impressive, but the software is just plain immature.  Not only Logitech's software, but the drivers for the individual games.  Now there are exceptions.  If you only play FSX with FS Force, reports are that it works excellent.  With other games your mileage will definitely vary.  There are a host of issues that are definitely real and frustrating (I won't repeat them here, but you should definitely read the rest of this forum for details), so your experience will come down to what games you play and how patient you are with the current limitations.  I am NOT saying that you shouldn't buy a G940, since I'm sure (crossing fingers) that these issues will eventually get ironed out.  If you're happy with lower-end sticks you should be quite happy with the G940, but if you're expecting a high-end caliber product, it's not quite there in many instances.

Re: G940 Opinions

Once I try it out for myself, I'll give a very detailed review. I've been in flight simulation for many years, and I know what to look for. Thank you for your reply, I appreciate it. I however would disagree with you by saying "Lower End Stick" this is a high end flight simulation set up, but the calibration software needs some rework.

Re: G940 Opinions

In addition to 13000 hours actual flight time, I have 25 years with flight sims and two months with the G940. I frankly find the system to be a disappointment. The stick is excellent. But flaws in wheel precision, mini-stick calibration, and a profiling software with limited control over the G940's functionality combine to make for a frustrating ownership experience. I've learned to overcome some of the profiler's shortfalls by editing XML files, making fake executables for each game, and running one of the included SDK demos to force a reduced spring force for a non-FFB flight sim (x-plane). I know what I'm doing and my issues are not the result of a failure on my part to comprehend the software or the need for proper calibration. I recommend sitting on your wallet until upcoming software (hopefully) correct the G940's flaws.

Re: G940 Opinions

Hi, thanks for your reply! So what you're saying is it's not the "Hardware" but the "Software"? I saw some videos of the software, and it just is a big dissapointment, but the hardware itself looks promising. Logitech will defintley have new calibration software soon I'm sure, cause Logitech is amazing! I went to my friends house, and he got the G940, and I tried it out with Flight Simulator X, and it works perfectly. Calibration is set right, and the force feedback is really a nice addition. He had no trouble ,and had it for 1 and a half months, he used it for over 50 hours he said. This is the new revolution of Flight Simming, but the software needs some rework. Thank you again for your reply!

Re: G940 Opinions

I would like to add, that we need to reliaze that this Software/Calibrator that came with it is the first release of it. Remember your Flight Simulators? When there was bugs, and the new software fixed them? This is what's going to happen, they'll release new software that'll fix these problems. From what I understand, 99% of problems encountered by SOME users are from older flight simulators, software calibration issues, etc.. 1% is from hardware related cases... faulty joystick.. etc.. that's just my 2 cents, with over 20 years of flight simulation, and 6,000 hours in a boeing 747, I think my opinion can be strongly considered. This is a great product, but it has a few bugs in the software. Thanks!

The videos, and reviews I saw from all over the website is great, there's promsiing results for this. Thank you!

Background:

I have had my G940 for about 3 weeks (I think) and flown on average 30 hours per week.

I have previously owned a Saitek X52(standard) + Saitek Pedals.

I primarely fly IL2-Sturmovik

I also fly some FSX, Black Shark and Rise of Flight.

I have not used FFB before, but have many friends online who has a broad experience with FFB.

Issue 1: (Which you seem to call nonsense)

The sensitivity of the Logitech appears to be lower than x52. Since Logitech claims that the G940

is the most sensitive joystick ever, I guess this is a temporary issue. As of present, all sensors

report only in steps between 2-5%, which means you will have to go back and forth on average

10-15 times to hit an exact percentage.

Status at Logitech:

Mark has recently confirmed this issue and says that Logitech are working on it.

Issue 2: "FFB sloppyness"

The force feedback does not center the stick all the way to the centre, but instead becomes

unresponsive at the last 250(out of 1000) units of motion. (I.e, the centre 25% of the joystick

does not have any return-to-center force at all)

Status at Logitech 1:

I have seen claims that there is no software that can *handle* the *extreme* FFB capabilities

of the G940. In fact, not even Logitechs own test-program can handle the force feedback stick.

This is a redicilous statement, which I disregard as pure nonsense.

Status at Logitech 2:

When I called Logitech support they did confirm this problem as an "admitted issue with the product".

(Which means it could either be a software/driver issue, or a hardware issue.) They also say that

Logitech are working with solving this issue.

My opinion of the stick?

With these two issues in mind, the G940 is currently only a semi-useful stick. Meaning, I've had to

disable the return-to-center forces completely to be able to use the stick at all. I keep finding myself

flicking rotaries back and forth again and again, to get to exact values.

The remaining FFB, (Eg. wing buffet effects, gun vibrations, ground bumps, etc) does work excellent

and has improved my energy-fighting considerably. There are some buttons I miss from the X52, I think

that is just a re-learning-issue.

In conclusion

If these two issues were fixed, the stick would be worth every penny!

Presently, I'm a bit ambivalent. The G940 is better than the x52 in almost every aspect(except maybe

ergonomic design). However, the x52 had even more issues (like constantly re-centering), meaning

it was even worse than the G940.

Logitech brands the G-series as being the Rolls Royce of periphials, and I would probably have paid

even more for a HIGH-quality joystick. But whatwith the existing flaws, the G940 has not met my expectations.

It IS good, however, knowing Logitech are working on the issues, but only time will tell if they are ever solved.
