Re: Google confirms Revue getting 3.2?

[ Edited ]

Isn't HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) basically an Apple proprietary product primarily for their iPhone, iPad OS as part of the Apple QuickTime software? Apple introduced it in 2009 in an attempt to steal the thunder away from the DLNA standard. To this date, HLS has not passed IETF standardization. HLS is still in draft.

Since 2003, DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) has been the standard and it already works just fine with Logitech Revue's Media Player app.

EDIT: As of Android 3.0, "Applications can now pass an M3U playlist URL to the media framework to begin an HTTP Live streaming session. The media framework supports most of the HTTP Live streaming specification, including adaptive bit rate."

I have owned a "ROKU 2 XS" for the past couple of months and have several dis-likes about it. It's extremely slow navigating the menus. There is no built-in Samba (Microsoft Windows) or DLNA networking support for it. I've installed Plex Media Server and had a go with that on my PC (WEI rated at 6.9). It was utterly slow to manage my average collection of about 900 films and television episodes (all AVI format.) The menuing system on ROKU's Plex channel is not intuitive at all -- there was no way to automatically sort my videos by directories. Plex instead, relied on the META data inside each of my AVI files. On the ROKU, there was no way to display the file name in list format -- something named, "Night Of The Living Dead [1968] Color" was indistinguishable from something named "Night Of The Living Dead [1990]" or even "Night Of The Living Dead [2006] 3D", which are all different versions/remakes of the same 1968 B&W classic. Also with ROKU, you'll need to use your own remote control in addition to it's custom BlueTooth powered remote because there are no volume up/down buttons on it... or any of the other standard TV buttons on it.

I also own a "Western Digital TV Live Streaming Media Player" (Gen3) WDBHG70000NBK. This works really well for what it does and it supports DLNA and Samba (Microsoft Windows) network streaming. But at this time, the Gen3 of this product is not too hacker-friendly (the Gen2 version is, but it lacks built-in WiFi).

Re: Google confirms Revue getting 3.2?

If you really want to try a different product than Google Tv, I would suggest giving a try to Boxee Box.... It is the only one that comes close to the benefits of Google TV and even surpasses it in interface experience. If unsure about it, try getting just the PC version of it to evaluate. It is  free of cost but it won't be supported after the latest version. Only the Boxee box will be supported in future. However, the PC version would give you the opportunity to evaluate it. By far I found it the best interface, better than Google TV.... but Google TV advantages it may not have if Google decides to aggressively support it in future (with Market). The latest Boxee version for PC/Mac/Linux is 1.5. It can be constriued as an impreovemnt but with bugs... If you want a stable performance, try looking for a previous version (.92 or .96 as I remember.... Currently it has more apps than GTV (around 250+) and has a browser too.But it does not have market kind of feature. It can play anything, icluding ISO files for DVDs. Although it did not support live TV (now a USB dongle can be added to Boxee box), I could still watch live TV by importing a channel list created in Windows media player for Silicondust HDHomeRun tuner. It acted like a file play. I can assure you will not be totally dissatisfied with the experience. If I did not see the Market and Chrome advantages along with the Google's presumed efforts towards getting into the living rooms, Boxee would have been my first choice to invest in.

Re: Google confirms Revue getting 3.2?

So....is this update ever coming out, or are we just supposed to buy the Vizio Google TV box for $99 when it comes out with support and 3.2 already on it?
Vizio has even said, they'd upgrade it to ICS after a while. It has a nice ARM processor too and extra Vizio app support.

Just saying, if you're actually going to update the Revue, you should tell us. Otherwise, don't waste our time.
Chrome is slow as hell and Netflix isn't working anymore.

It was rumored that the Vizio GTV box would retail for $99 and be released over the summer. However their has been no "official" announcement from Vizio about the release date or price. So that $99 price is not set in stone at this juncture...

In fact recently Sony announced that they will be releasing a new GTV box and Blu-Ray player this September in Europe - for the equivalent of $266 for the set-top box and $399 for the GTV Blu-Ray player. No specific details were mentioned about the USA release date and price.

Re: Google confirms Revue getting 3.2?

That Visio looks pretty sweet.  If it's a hundred bucks (or thereabouts), I'll pitch my Revue and get this. I cannot trust Logitech anymore and am sick of visiting this site to see if Logi is doing anything, which of course is always a letdown.

Re: Google confirms Revue getting 3.2?

Guys, the simple fact is that Logitech doesn't give a crap about us, or about what platform we end up on. They're out of the smart TV game, so Apple TV, Boxee Box, Vizio... they just don't care.

We consumers are utterly powerless. They know it, so they're not going to help. They can't even be bothered to have an actual Logitech employee moderate this forum, so what are the odds they have anything more than one guy in a basement somewhere pretending to work on this update for us?

Well, Logitech, here's the deal. Your terrible decision making regarding the Google TV platform isn't my fault. And you have my money. But you can't be bothered to support the product you sold me, and that's unjust. So I'm done.

I, like many others, have about 10 Logitech devices in my house. And I'll never buy another one. And neither will anyone I can prevent from buying one, because you guys can't be trusted. And maybe if your market share suffers because we decided not to put up with this crap from you guys, you'll understand exactly how big a mistake you're making here. Until then, I won't be holding my breath that this update will ever arrive. You have exactly zero credibility.

Thanks for nothing.

Wow, what a first world white guy problem!  "Oh noes, I can'ts be on the bleeding edge with my Logitech Revue, so [Moderator Edit: Per our community terms of use, please refrain from using abusive language] You Logitech!  I'll get on this forum and tell those Logitech [Moderator Edit: Per our community terms of use, please refrain from using abusive language] what's what!"  You knew what you were buying when you bought it.  It had what it had, and any more is icing.  Logitech backed out, and that is unfortunate.  Unfortunate for them and unfortunate for us.  We are out $300 "tops" for early adopters...THEY are out millions of dollars on a failed product and people have undoubtedly lost their jobs.  So, I will say, suck it the [Moderator Edit: Per our community terms of use, please refrain from using abusive language] up!  Go to Syria and tell somebody about your "Revue problem" and find out what their opinion is.

Re: Google confirms Revue getting 3.2?

Well this is just my take on it, the way companies think and the way consumers think are two different things. The google tv idea is not a failed idea otherwise other companies would not be getting into it, they see the market for it growing. For Logitech to call it a failed product doesn't mean to us consumers it's a failed product, hey I love my Revue and think it's the best 250.00 I ever spent, they are going by, shall we say-wishful, fantasy, hopefull? they expected to sell so many units in a very small range of time, to them the projected sales in such a time may be a failure, but projections on sales is just that a projection, nothing to do with real life. As example my brother went to buy a Revue after he saw mine, well it was already out of the store, uumm, please give people more than a few months to buy something. I know a few people that still have an analog tv, they want a new HDTV but just bought a analog before the new tv's came out, so they will get one next time around for new tv, can you imagine if they puulled the HDTV"s out of stores because everyone didn't trash their tv's the second the new ones came out. I may in future buy the new built in google tv's-but not until this tv has had it, which could be a few years, so I hope they don't call the new ones a failure, I will buy when needed, for a product to catch on, it has to be there to buy, as in on the market more than a few months or year, be there and peole will buy.
