Revue Surround Sound Issues With Optical

I posted about this a while back, and was hoping for a fix with honeycomb. Unfortunately not. I have a Revue hooked up with a DirecTV DVR into a Denon AVR-1611 Receiver with an HDMI cable for picture and an optical cable for audio. Here is how my setup looks:

Picture -

DirecTV->HDMI in->Revue->HDMI out->Denon Reciever

Sound -

DirecTV->HDMI in->Revue->Optical Out-> Denon Reciever

I have tweaked around with the settings of both the receiver and the revue, hoping to find a fix. Haven't found one yet. As is, even with Dolby Digital selected in the system settings for the revue, my receiver still recognizes it as PCM. I know its not the receiver (I have other devices hooked up with full surround sound), and not the directv dvr (it has surround sound when connected directly to the denon). That leaves the revue as the culprit. Anyone else having this issue? Has anyone found a fix? I also tried unplugging the HDMI out leaving just the optical going to the reciever, which resulted in PERFECT SURROUND SOUND, but just without picture. Let me know when ANYONE figures anything out! Thanks!

Re: Revue Surround Sound Issues With Optical

You might want to see if you have the ability to disable the audio output on the HDMI either at the DVR or receiver since I will guess that they will both default to sending audio through the HDMI cable. You could try an HDMI to DVI adapter and DVI to HDMI adapter???

I find it odd you did not get a picture, after you unpluged Revue HDMI out to denon, did you reconnect it to the TV for the image? Optical only does audio.

Try this:

Picture-
DirecTV->HDMI in->Revue->HDMI out->TV

Sound -

Revue->Optical Out-> Denon Reciever

What happens is the Revue receives the audio and video from the DirecTv and will then pass image via HDMI and split the Optical for sound to Denon Receiver.

Having HDMI and Optical to the Receiver is not needed. Check this guide below and look at option 3 "Connecting Revue to my Set-top box, TV and AV Receiver (Using SPDIF/Optical cable)"

Re: Revue Surround Sound Issues With Optical

I'm running into issues with the optical spdif since the honeycomb update. Occassionally, in the middle of a movie, the sound will just stop. My setup is this:

Revue -> Optical SPDIF -> Receiver
Revue -> HDMI -> TV

I don't have a set top box, so those are the only connections. I have to restart the Revue to restore the sound. This never occurred before the honeycomb update, but happens about once a day, depending on how much we're watching TV.

Test all your cable and ports on your devices and make sure they are all working, if all cables and ports on your devices are free of hardware problems when not using the Revue then contact support, sounds like potentially a problem with the Revue, maybe hardware related. Ohh and a factory reset never hurts before contacting support.

support options and factory reset instructions can be found on the link above. Support options on the right under talk to an expert section.

Re: Revue Surround Sound Issues With Optical

I've tested the cables and receiver, so I'll try a factory reset next. It seems a strange coincidence that the revue would have a hardware problem when updating to honeycomb. Thanks for the suggestions.

Re: Revue Surround Sound Issues With Optical

After a factory reset, the behavoir persists. Sound plays fine for a bit, then stops. Video remains fine. Restarting the receiver does not fix it. Sound no longer plays in any app. Restarting the revue fixes the sound, until the next time...

REGARDING THIS ISSUE...IT SEEMS THE REVUE SPIDF OUTPUT STOPS SENDING A SIGNAL DURING PERIODS OF SILENCE. WHEN AUDIO RESUMES, THERE IS ABOUT A 1 SECOND DELAY BEFORE IT KICKS IN AGAIN. AT LEAST THAT IS HOW MY HK AVR525 INTERPRETS IT, BUT DIFFERENT RECEIVERS MAY TAKE MORE OR LESS TIME TO RESTART AUDIO OUTPUT. I HAVEN'T FOUND THIS TO BE AN ISSUE FOR MOVIES SINCE THERE ARE VERY RARELY TIMES OF COMPLETE SILENCE, BUT IT IS QUITE ANNOYING WITH CERTAIN POORLY PRODUCED LOW BUDGET TV SHOWS LIKE SOUTHPARK. I HAVE NOT FOUND A WORKAROUND, OTHER THAN DISCONNECTING THE REVUE AND THROWING IT IN THE TRASH. ONLY IDEA I HAVE IS MAYBE CREATING AN AUDIO FILE WITH SOME REALLY LOW FREQUENCY STATIC (THAT IS BELOW THE RANGE OF YOUR RECEIVER/SPEAKERS) AND SOMEHOW WRITING A TASKER SCRIPT FOR THE REVUE THAT ALLOWS IT TO PLAY SIMULTANEOUSLY WITH THE DESIRED AUDIO. NOT SURE IF THE HARDWARE HAS THIS MIXING CAPABILITY, AND FRANKLY I DON'T HAVE THE TIME TO MESS WITH IT. SINCE YOU'RE NOT USING AN STB, I WOULD SUGGEST EBAYING THE REVUE AND GRABBING A NEXUS 7 WITH A CRACKED SCREEN AND HOOKING THAT UP AS YOUR HTPC. THEN YOU CAN USE HULU PLUS AND ALL THE OTHER GREAT APPS NOT AVAILABLE ON THE REVUE!
