Slingbox: TCP vs. Relay Connection Type

Anyone know what determines wether the Slingbox app uses a TCP or Relay connection type?  Mine seems to vary randomly -- one day it's TCP, the next it could be Relay, with no changes in configuration.

I've never recceived anything other than a TCP connection after setting up remote viewing successfully on the slingbox / Router. A Snatt connection is the fallback position when the slingbox can't establish a remote connected TCP connection. Relay shows up when the sling severs are being slammed and use alternate servers to establish a connection, but it's still an extension of Snatt. For the 3 years I've had my slingbox, I've never seen 'Relay' under connection type show up once I've done a successful setup of remote viewing on the slingbox end. My slingcatcher couldn't function with a Snatt / relay connection, but I do receive a faster stream when I don't have the router port forwarded correctly and do see Snatt and relay show up as stream type under those circumstances. Kind of a head scratcher if you're seeing random Tcp and Relay connections when you press shift and Q on the Revue under stream type. If that turns out to be normal for a remote connection, then that's news to me.

Thanks, Callanish1.  Are your emote connections on the same LAN, or truly remote?  Mine is the latter.

I just checked the web player, and it says I have a SNATT connectionThe REvue still shows relay.

Re: Slingbox: TCP vs. Relay Connection Type

Like you, I'd come under the 'truly remote' category. Outside of you having different stream types, are you experiencing any issues with your slingbox whatsoever. I come across people, like myself, who have owned their slingbox's for a while and haven't experienced any major problems to complain about (touch wood). Then I come across others streaming remotely and they're experiencing nothing but problems. Granted, the revue sling app freezes up when you try to change channels, etc., but sling has acknowledged this and it's probably O.S related, so I can deal with that, but so far streaming to a far away location up to this point has been pretty stable and reliable for me.

Re: Slingbox: TCP vs. Relay Connection Type

Aside from the known Revue issues, the only problem I have appears to be bandwidth related.  I'm supposed to have 2Mbps up at the Slingbox and 5 Mbps down at the Revue, but i often encounter streaming rates far less (1Mbps and lower), which makes for pretty bad video quality.

The bottleneck alternates between the home and remote connection (based on the Revue app's bandwidth test).  When the bottleneck is remote, I usually get much better results on Speedtest.net than the Revue app shows.  When the bottleneck appears to be at home, unfortunately, there's no way for me to test the bandwidth using Speedtest.net since I'm not there.

How is your streaming rate, and have you done anything special to optimize it?
