should i update camera firmware?

every time i start Commander, and now when i start my mobile command app on iphone - it is recommending an update to my cameras firmware.

Camera1 = 3.0.167

Camera2 = 3.0.196

I tried unsuccessfully to update Camera1 several times, and it takes nearly an hour for it to basically revert back to current firmware version, so i'm skiddish to try again on either camera.  Yes, used all info from tech support (even called) and support forums to put camera on close electrical outlet and all that - it downloads firmware, programs, but then just does nothing for about an hour.  finally i have to reset to get it to revert back to old firmware.

question is - where is info on what the differences/updates are in more recent camera firmware?

Re: should i update camera firmware?

If Alert Commander PC is connected via WiFi, try using an ethernet cable...sometimes WiFi struggles with firmware or HomePlug.

If you go to the Support link at the top of this page and choose Product Support, go through that until you get to the appropriate product page and select the Download link there...explains all about the current release.

Re: should i update camera firmware?

camera is not on wifi.. just odd that it seems to download the firmware, program, and then just never come back until reset.

i also checked the download pages in support; but they don't specify what is new for the Camera Firmware... just notes new features of Alert Commander.

[ Edited ]

It is the PC on WiFi I was referring to.

The release notes describe functionality changes, but don't explain what is s/w and what is a f/w change...one of the Logitech Engineers may have to tell you that.  I suspect that the full 15fps when zoomed-out all the way is a f/w change, but just a guess.  Any change that affects web/mobile would be a f/w change...as the PC is not involved in that connection...again, a logical guess <g>

Re: should i update camera firmware?

ah.  PC is wired.

just tried again; one camera updated just fine to new firmware, other camera AWOL now (again).  i suspect it will come back after numerous resets and then be back on old firmware.

Re: should i update camera firmware?

If your HomePlug and Bandwidth diagnostics look good, then maybe try to set the Motion Sensitivity to zero for the camera ( turns-off motion recording ), wait a few minutes to ensure no clip copying is going on, and then try the f/w update...just in case the camera was busy with clip recording/copying while trying to do the f/w update.

Re: should i update camera firmware?

Hey frankmcj,

I kinda ran into this problem as well and here is what I had to do to get it up and running.

i , Unplug the Power for the Camera and take the sd card out.

ii, Plug the camera back in and re-find the camera on the commander

If all goes well, it will say one of your camera's firmware is out of date, do you want to update or something along that line...just say yes and update it.

If you are still having trouble, do a custom update via the commander

iii, Go to General>Updates>Update Camera and apply a custom update.

Once the camera gets updated, you can re-insert the sd card back into the camera.

Hope this will resolve the problem that you seem to be running into.

Re: should i update camera firmware?

Tried all of the above.  thanks for suggestions, but still same result.  any time i try to update firmware in any fashion; looks like it goes perfectly, then is offline for about an hour while i reset/unplug/plug-in/wash-rinse-repeat until it finally comes back online.

Really hope Logitech Tech Support can help because NOTHING seems to be working, and i can tell now that the camera that DID update has a much better video frame rate when zoomed all the way out.

Re: should i update camera firmware?

Have  you attempted to plug the ethernet cable directly into your computer instead of the Router/Modem prior to performing the steps that I had mentioned above?

Also, I have read in the postings somewhere that if you were to use take a power supply from a camera that has been updated and swap it with the one that is not updating, it would do the trick.

This was a post made by CatLogitech awhile ago when a customer was running into a similar situation.

 Try it out.

Re: should i update camera firmware?

good suggestions; but still no dice.  have logitech support trying too (think they liked your suggestion of swappin gthe network adapters), but same result.

i keep thinking it's something to do with the camera since the TRANSFER and PROGRAM seem to complete; but then - it just goes blank and takes nearly an hour to come back (of course after numerous un-plug/re-plug, reset, etc etc etc).

painful !!
