Best settings for music / movie playback

If possible I'd like to be able to maximise the quality of the sound coming from the speakers.

Typically I've had the speakers connected via the yellow, black and green cables and using the 6 channel direct option on the control unit.

My sound card does have a optical out slot in it. Is it better that I use this over the yellow, black and green cables for things like music and movie playback (and possibly some gaming)?

Which of the control unit effect options are best, should I be sticking with 6 channel direct or utilising alternatives like PL Music and PL Movie?

Optical would be the best for movies as it could provide true Dolby Digital or DTS.
