Hi,
today I got a new Z-5500 because my old one stopped working.
I noticed a difference between both versions: As you can see on the picture, the Powerbutton is now replaced through a "Headphone-Button".
When I push the button, the backlight goes off but that's it: The system doesn't power off but goes in a "headphone-only mode" (Sounds logically for a headphone-button).
It feels like a regression - because I now have to switch the button on the subwoofer to power the system down.
Could it be possible that the "new" system is older than my first z-5500 system?
Here is a photo of both control-units (left: new, right: old)
Sorry for my bad english! ![]()

So when you plug in a headphone on the jack it does not automatically go into headphones mode, how about the power button on the remote.. also wha is the PID of your unit ?

Hi Earlz,
Yes, if I plug in a headphone it also goes into the headphone mode - that's not my problem.
I started this thread because there is no power button! ![]()
Old system: PID R848
New (?) system: PID R948
Here is another photo, the lower one is the newer remote control (as you can see, there is now power button):
If I use the old remote control to push the power-button it also went in the headphone mode ![]()

Hi,
"Did you look on the back of the sub?"
Yes, the subwoofer is the same as the old one - no changes here! ![]()
"i think they sold u a model of 5 years old before, the first z5500 models."
Nope, it's a new one manufactured in december 2009 ![]()

Hi All,
I apologize for not having information on this available earlier.
The new look is due to the new power regulations put into effect in the EU. The Standby mode had to be deleted as the power drain was too great. Rather than design a completely new remote and control pod, we retasked some of the buttons.
As you all have seen, the power button on the remote and control pod have been retasked to Headphones.
When the Headphone mode is used the speakers will be muted.

So you mean under standby mode the system drains more power compared to it powered up so we have to unplug the device everytime we are not using it ?
I guess this explains why the control pod is as hot in standby mode as it is when playing audio..

Hi,
No, that is not what I said.
I said that the new power consumption regulations for EU have a limit lower than the Z-5500 can achieve in Stand by mode. There for that mode had to be eliminated. If you want to consume less energy you could switch it to Headset mode which is significantly less power draw that regular "On" mode, but still not at a range that meets the EU standards for "Standby". When switched into Headset mode the speakers are muted.
