Hi,
In 2.5 years I have not seen a single optical input failure on a control pod.
Logitech is not refurbishing control pods.
Could it be possible that the PS3 is not sending a signal?

Mike,
thank you for your quick reply.
The fact you say this is a never heard before issue, actually makes me happy. hopefully i will get to figure it out, but not sure how much hope there is as i already tried 4 different optical cables and 3 different sources (PS3, PC and TV optical out).
i may ask for RMA later this week.

Found this thread when looking for an answer to whether or not I can buy a new control unit for my Z5500.
My unit is long out of warranty as I got the whole unit in '06 with my Dell XPS computer. However, I have never used the optical port until this past week when I got a new PS3 and wanted to try out the audio quality. The optical port did not work the first time using the provided PS3 optical cable. Got a new cable from best buy, no change. Tried a different source, a Sony DVD player, did not work. Tried an XBox360, did not work. I even went as far as trying a third and very high end optical cable, no luck. I think after all these different tests I can conclude the control unit's optical input is not working.
Where can we "out of warranty" customers buy a new control unit for our Z5500's? I've wanted to try a new unit from almost day one actually because the digital settings in the menu have never produced sound, even coming from a high-end Sound Blaster XFI sound card. I've always been forced to use 6-channel direct, which has been adequate for years.
Thank you,
-Patrick

Now I am 100% sure that my system is faulty. Sometimes my optical worked after unplug/plug the power cord, but today even that did not help. I will send it to RMA tomorrow.
For those out of warranty i suggest try eBay.
Mods, feel free to close this thread.

Hi,
You can call Technical Support and ask for an OWC. We will sell you a new Z-5500 at a discount. You will need to have the control pod from your old systyem to send to us.

I have developed the same problem. My unit has occasionally developed a stutter when using optical input and the control pod would flash from "Dolby" (or stereo) to "No Digital Data". This has happened twice and both times it was fixed by a power cycle. Last night, I had this issue and now it wont accept any optical input.
I was wondering how other people have overcome this and what exactly an OWC is? I am in New Zealand so I believe the extend of the support available to me is very limited (I cant even get a replacement remote!?!)

adrian l
get in touch with logitech , and persist , and they will replace the system, or they did with me
my problem was with the back light ,but if you read forums, the control pod seems a bit unreliable to say the least
