Hello west1980,
The Z506 speakers rely on your computer to decode the audio as the speakers themselves do not have digital connections or a digital decoder. If your sound card can be configured to output out of three different 3.5mm jacks you will get true 5.1 surround sound. One output will need to be for the front left and right, one for the rear left and right, and another for the front center and sub woofer. The Z506 cables are color coded and the green is for the front left and right, the black is for the rear left and right, and the orange is for the center and sub woofer.
I hope this helps you out.
Sincerely,
