Re: z-640 speaker problem

[ Edited ]
Hi there, I've been using a Logitech Z640 analog 5.1 surround system through a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 for about 2+ years now.

For most of those two years, I had this issue;
when I turned the volume up or down using the volume knob on the center speaker (which controls the volume for all speakers), I would hear a loud crackling noise for as long as I was moving that knob.

The turning of the volume knob had a seconday effect; it caused the audio level in the rear-right speaker to get low. What I mean is, if I turned the volume up with that knob, sometimes the volume of the rear right speaker would suddenly drop out and it would be at a whisper. The only way to correct this was re-twisting the volume knob (while playing music or something) until the sound level in the rear right speaker came back.

----

Now onto my current problem:
The speakers sounded just fine this morning, but I had to unplug everything in order to remove my PC and open it so that I could connect a new fan.

I put the PC back into place and reconnected everything, but all of a sudden I noticed it:
No sound in the center and front-right speakers.

The front-left, and both rear speakers sound perfect. The front-right and center appeared to have no sound.

Strangely, when I press the Matrix button, the center speaker has sound coming out of it, and it seems to be going at full volume. The right speaker also has sound coming out of it, but it is faint and at a lower volume than the other speakers.

Note that this only happens when I press "Matrix".

- All cables are connected correctly, I am 100% sure of this; I have checked and re-checked.

- It is not the sound card. I plugged the speakers into a different audio source and it made no difference. The front right and center speakers still didn't work.

Does anyone have any idea what's happening here?

Re: z-640 speaker problem

UPDATE:

Here's something weird. The cables for each individual speaker are coming from the subwoofer. I decided to switch the left and right cables (so the left speaker is on the right speaker channel and vice versa).

When plugged into the left speaker output, the right speaker had perfect sound...... Whatever the problem is, it doesn't seem to be the actual speakers.....perhaps it's the cables or something?? I'm just at a loss for explaining this.

Re: z-640 speaker problem

I have had my z-640's for about 4-5 years and just yesterday my rear Left Speaker went dead, I checked it out and it was the Rear Left speaker jack on the sub that died.
Its not all dead but very, very faint. I've used them every day about as loud as my ears can take sometimes and still contiue to work perfectly. the Bass is wonderful, really loud, my parents complain about it and i've got the knob on the back and the level on the Creative Soundblaster software at half. I love Logitech and hope to get the z-5300's soon, I'll probably live with my half-dead rear Left Speaker for now.

Re: z-640 speaker problem

hey grahf , i have those exact speakers and there great! They have worked fine for years and iv had them loud as i can take for that whole time. The quality's brilliant and the base is amazing, but i reacently turned on my computer ready to blast music and realised that the front right speaker wasnt working but all the others did (with the matrix button off). when i had checked all the connections and sound card (creative sound blaster x-fi extreme music) i realised that they were all fine. I then switched matrix on and was happy to hear that some sound was coming from the front right speaker, but very faint. When i tried a film, i noticed that no voices came from the centre speaker and had to turn matrix off. With matrix on the front right speaker was just playing the same as the centre but fainter. I was going to take them appart and check if two wires were crossing in the subwoofer but im finding it hard to get into. Have you found the sollution otherwise can anyone help? thanx lambo07..

Re: z-640 speaker problem

Hey there lambo....wow this was an old thread. My post above is from a *year* ago! I was pretty surprised to find an e-mail saying there was a reply today. Unfortunately, I was never able to fix the problem. I gave up trying and just acted on the assumption that it was dead. I eventually bought the X-530 5.1 set, which I like a lot better anyway. I also use a set of Sennheiser hd212pro headphones. Good luck!
