Current Update to Logitech Media Server Doesn't Open

I keep getting invites to update the Logitech Media server, but when I open System Preferences on my MacBook Pro (OS X 10.6.8) I get a message saying that "To use the “Logitech Media Server” preferences pane, System Preferences must quit and reopen."  This is normal, as I have updated previously and this action is called for.  However, with the current update when I click OK, the System Preferences window never reopens.

Any ideas what's causing this?  Or is it just a faulty update?

Re: Current Update to Logitech Media Server Doesn't Open

Hello BritBlues,

You are likely to have the best results doing a complete clean install, removing all traces of the LMS software before reinstalling.

(note that if your running OSX Lion you may have to unhide your Library folder)

If you are on OSX Lion and you cannot see your Library folder.

- Go to finder and select:

- Applications

- Utilities

- Terminal

In the terminal type in:

chflags nohidden /Users/(enter account name here "without brackets")/Library

(pay close attention to spacing)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To perform Clean Install:

1.Go to System Preferences > Squeezebox Server and click Stop Server:

2.Close System Preferences.

3.Remove the following files and folders:

Now, you MUST make sure the server has been stopped before you start moving files and folders to the trash otherwise, the OS simply will not let you.
a. /Users/*User Account*/Library/Caches/ - remove Squeezebox Folder
b. /Users/*User Account*/Library/Application Support/ - remove Squeezebox Folder
c. /Users/*User Account*/Library/Logs/ - remove Squeezebox folder
d. /Users/*User Account*/Library/Preferences - remove com.slimdevices.slim.plist and com.slimdevices.slim.plist.lockfile
e. Macintosh HD//Library/PreferencePanes - remove Squeezebox.prefpane
*User Account* = the customer's user account.

Additionally, if a previous version was installed for All users as opposed to just one user, the folders and files will be located on the Main HD Library directory and not the user directory.

a.Home > Library > Application Support > Squeezebox
b.Home > Library > Caches > Squeezebox
c.Macintosh HD > Library > PreferencePanes > Squeezebox.prefPane

4.Move the files listed above to the Trash and empty the Trash.

Cheers,

- Logan

Re: Current Update to Logitech Media Server Doesn't Open

Hi Logan,

The issue is that I can't sop the server from running, or do a clean install, because when I open System Preferences I get this message "To use the “Logitech Media Server” preferences pane, System Preferences must quit and reopen."

System Preferences closes, but then never reopens.  So, I'm stuck in a never ending cycle.  Seems to me a Logitech software update issue, since other people are experiencing the same problem.

Re: Current Update to Logitech Media Server Doesn't Open

The close system preferences is something that has been going on for a long time and happens with some other non-Logitech programs as well. Are you not seeing the Logitech Media server control panel after System preferences closes?

Re: Current Update to Logitech Media Server Doesn't Open

Correct.  Once System Preferences closes, the Logitech Media Server control panel never appears.  Logitech Support says I need to restart my mac in 32-bit mode, then do a clean install.  Seems ridiculous.

Re: Current Update to Logitech Media Server Doesn't Open

Try the clean install first and see if that helps. You can always go back a version at http://downloads.slimdevices.com

Re: Current Update to Logitech Media Server Doesn't Open

The problem is I can't do a clean install, since you need to stop the server from running, and to do that you must open System Preferences, which then says it must close and reopen in order to use the Media Server, and then it never does so the cycle starts over again.

I suppose I can just manually remove anything that says Logitech from preferences, applications, etc., then try installing again.  Maybe that would work.  Any idea of how many places such files might exist for the media server?

[ Edited ]

Try rebooting your Mac first to stop the server then try searching Squeezebox and delete anything that says Squeezebox as well as Slimserver, Squeezecenter and Logitech Media Server. Then empty your trash then reboot your Mac again and redownload the file and install.

Re: Current Update to Logitech Media Server Doesn't Open

sudo killall perl in the terminal will stop the server from running and allow a clean install of the LMS

However this may not entirely work as it seems to have somethign to do with a recent Apple update from what I am told

Let me know how a clean install works for you
