How to change sort order in "Music Folder"

Hi all,

It was by name, folders first. But then after some update, I guess, it changed. And now it treats folders and files equally and it's a mess.

How to fix this?

Thanks

Re: How to change sort order in "Music Folder"

Hmmm, I'm not sure what you're seeing. I have the latest firmware on all my players and the latest LMS software (7.7.2).  When I use browse music folder, I see things exactly the way my folders are organized. I first see the ARTIST folder, then if I click on the ARTIST name, I get a list of the different ALBUM folders (subdirectories), then if I click on an album, I see a listing of tracks.

Confirm that you haven't done something to change your actual file structure (this is not related to LMS, just the files and directories and subdirectories on your harddrive).  And if the organization on your disk is correct, try a "clear and rescan" from within LMS > Settings.

Just finished rescan. Nothing changed.

Maybe you didn't get what I'm talking about. It is "My Music" -> "Music Folder".

Files and folder there are sorted alphabeticaly, which is good, but folders imho should be listed first.

Re: How to change sort order in "Music Folder"

I was talking about music folders. And what I see is folders. Then again, all my music is within a folder in my structure.  Do you have stray files that are at the top level directory and *not* in a folder?  See pictures. First level, I see a list of all my ARTIST folders, clicking on Bob Dylan, I see all the folders for ALBUMS, then clicking on an album, I see the tracks.  But again, this is because I've organized my music folders this way. I have no tracks that are NOT within some folder or the other....

I guess I have to manually put ALL my files in folders if there is no proper sorting in LMS or Squeezebox Touch. It's definitely a bug. Thanks garymc

Re: How to change sort order in "Music Folder"

if they have artist/album tags, then you can use mp3tag function of "tag > filename" to automatically create directories and subdirectories based on artist and album. a few mouse clicks and you can reorganize 100,000 files if you want. Obviously, test a bit first....

Re: How to change sort order in "Music Folder"

I have the same issue.

All my albums are sorted by {First Letter} -> Artist -> Album -> Tracks but I also do have a few single tracks at the top level, under the {First Letter} folder,  mainly from 1-Hit-Wonders.

To me it makes no sense to put single tracks to an artists folder.

In older versions of logitech media server it was no problem. Folders were sorted before files but I think this has changed.

Example:  In my K-Folder there now is Kansas, Karat, Karel_Fialka - Hey Matthews.mp3, Kid_Rock, Kiss, ....

In some way this way of sorting makes sense but I would like if there were some option settings on sorting.

The way Linux sorts files and folders is a bit different to windows and so the sorting appears differently when I browse my home servers (linux) music folders via samba or if I browse with the web GUI of the media library.

This can be quite a nag if you cannot find your files just because they appear somewhere else in the tree.

Re: How to change sort order in "Music Folder"

Is it not easier to use artist or album ? Or search  If the files are properly tagged ? Artist > all songs and browse ?

Even single can have an album tag that is the name of the single , then your singles can be sorted among the albums.

Re: How to change sort order in "Music Folder"

Sorting by tags requires that tags are properly set. To my experience setting file/folder names is much easier than to maintain tags. This is because file and folder names are always visible and easy to manage e.g. through simple batch scripting. Maintaining tags properly is much more difficult and error prone. Especially if you exchange music with friends tags can easily be messed up without immediate notice. To me file and folder names are the natural object properties which apply to all kind of data. I admit that tags can be more powerful but I hate to deal with different tools for music, movies, pictures etc. If I use artist or album, sorting to my liking is even more difficult because of different character sets and and incorporated algorithms. For example I have a folder 0-9 for bands starting with a digit. Thus the (small) group of those bands is not split up into 10 different folders like with sort by artist. Sorting by album is also not my favorite because I usually want to listen to a certain band according to my mood and not to a certain album. I also can remember band names more easily than album names. Also if I sort by Music Folders everything is in a nice small but details list . If I search for Albums or Artist every error in the tags messes the view, compiling the browse list takes much longer and every item occupies multiple lines which requires more scrolling. It may be that small music collection do not exhibit these draw backs but once you get beyond 50000 tracks you are going to notice.
