Okay, but weird. If the SqueezeBox can now be recognized by the DLNA server on the phone why does the computer still have to run LMS. There must be a way around this?!

LMS running on the computer is the DLNA server. The squeezebox is really, really not a good choice for (1) streaming music from a phone or (2) simply using DLNA to access the SB player (as the DLNA is an afterthought, recently added to LMS and not nearly as good in terms of capability as the native capability of the LMS). You're trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.

Squeezeboxes always need a server to run. One might not realize it, but even the menus you browse on a Squeezebox are generated on the server, the playlist is stored on the server and and of course also the music.
The server can either be mysqueezebox.com (no DLNA capabilities) or your own LMS (with some DLNA capabilities).
Now the "trick" the LMS server uses is, that it pretends to be a media server and also a media renderer (for each Squeezebox).
So your phone is talking to LMS all the time, not directly to the Squeezebox.
Whenever your phone tells LMS via DLNA to play a song, LMS sets up a single track playlist for the corresponding Squeezebox, so the actual Squeezebox in the end does not even realize that it was controlled via DLNA.
To make my long answer short: no there is no way around LMS when you want to use DLNA together with Squeezeboxes.
SqueezePlayer will stream all your music to your Android Device! Now available on Android market.
On iPad SqueezePad will stream your music and remote control your Squeezeboxes.

I came across this thread as I was wondering the same thing- whether or not it is possible to stream direct from android phone to squeezebox. I've read through the thread and it seems it can't be done- fair enough. a question for garymc- why do you seem hell bent on trying to belittle Jamolah? I think for 3 or 4 posts you've questioned why he won't use a pc; why he only has music on his phone and suggested it's only a matter of time until his music gets wiped? If I am missing the point of your nasty attitude then please explain, otherwise perhaps you should take a read back through your posts and apologise to Jamolah.
To answer the questions which seem to leave you flabbergasted-
Why not store music on a pc? It's the 21st century- smartphones! tablets! cloud computing! Jamolah appears to be bracing this change.
Why only have one copy of music on your phone? Have you used music streaming services? Spotify. Napster. To name only two. If the songs are lost (ie phone breaks), they are automatically re-synced to your new phone when you set up your Spotify account. Better than having two copies of everything.

hmmm, I'm sorry you read it this way. i was simply trying to provide factual info on how squeezeboxes currently work (or don't work). i was not trying to belittle anyone. i do live in the21st century and use and embrace smart phones, ipads, and cloud music services (spotify in the past, currently MOG). In talking about backing up music I was referring to his own music rather than music rented from spotify, etc. I too use the cloud to stream music to my smart devices and my squeezeboxes, but I also have thousands of albums that are NOT contained in the cloud services, notwithstanding their millions of tracks. Thus a good personal backup plan is critical for me.
And i do apologize to the original poster if he took my posts as anything other than trying to provide specific, timely answers to his questions.

Why only have one copy of music on your phone? Have you used music streaming services? Spotify. Napster. To name only two. If the songs are lost (ie phone breaks), they are automatically re-synced to your new phone when you set up your Spotify account. Better than having two copies of everything.
Well, if you use a streaming service like Spotify, the music is not only on your phone, isn't it?
And then there is no reason to stream from your phone to the Squeezebox, draining the battery, you can as well just stream directly from Spotify to your Squeezebox.
So the use case boils down to streaming music ONLY on the phone and NOT in the cloud to your Squeezebox.
Completely setting aside the fact that Spotify has less than half of my music library, they are still pretty limited. Just listened to their Olympics opening playlist where they had to replace a lot of the original songs with covers or just other stuff because the original songs where not in their library - starting with the Beatles and Paul McCartney, to name just the most obscure example.
Plus, if you really like something you need a separate backup. I've had Spotify for a few years now and around 1/3 of my bookmarked track are no longer available because for some reason or the other they got removed from Spotify's library.
Spotify is great to listen into new music or to share links but it's not a replacement for an own music collection unless you only want to listen to new blockbuster-type of stuff.
