Re: Squeezebox Transporter/Vortexbox setup for extreme Dummies

On Windows 7,from Start menu, there is no "Network" icon.  Going through Control Panel to "Network and Internet" or "System and Security" shows no sign of VB anywhere.  Mine is the only Windows computer in the house, but going from one of the Macs gets no result either.artifet

Re: Squeezebox Transporter/Vortexbox setup for extreme Dummies

It would be helpful if you would answer the questions previously posed.  You seem to be all over the place. I'm trying to get you to slow down a bit and take this step by step.  You keep looking for the VB in control panel, search, etc.  That's not now it works.  And the VB is not something you connect to your laptop. It is connected to your ROUTER and you access the VB via the laptop over your network.  You should probably stop trying to rip CDs until you get a handle on how these things are all communicating and how things work. You're trying to drive the car and you haven't figured out how to turn on the engine yet.  :smileyhappy:

1. with the VBA on and fully booted up, go to your laptop. Click on START, then "Windows Explorer" (if not there click on all programs and find "Windows Explorer".  Once you click on windows explorer, it should show you all the various files/directories on your laptop, including desktop, C: drive, etc.  (all on a list down the left side of screen).  Somewhere toward the bottom of that list you should see NETWORK.  If you click on NETWORK and expand it, do you see a listing for VORTEXBOX?

2. completely separate from #1 above, what happens when you go to internet explorer (or firefox) on your laptop and enter:

http://192.168.1.8

Does this get you to  the VB webGUI?

What about

http://192.168.1.8:9000/

Does this get you to the LMS webGUI?

Re: Squeezebox Transporter/Vortexbox setup for extreme Dummies

OK, sorry about jumping around, but frustrated today that I was on the GUI screen and now lost it again.  First, I rebooted the VB to see if that was a problem, but doesn't seem to be the case.  The VB is still connected to the #1 slot on the router, I can access all the router info from the laptop. 1) There is no listing on my laptop for Windows Explorer, only "Explorer" listed is Internet Explorer.  So there is no listing for Vortexbox, and as I've said before, there is no sign of it when entered in "Search" box either.  2)  When I enter the 192.168.1.8 into the Internet explorer, I get a screen saying :

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

What you can try:

Diagnose Connection Problem

More information

which is strange since that is one of the ways I got the VB GUI page up yesterday.  Same with the other link.  I'm going to shut it all down and try again.  But I still don't expect the VB to show up.

Re: Squeezebox Transporter/Vortexbox setup for extreme Dummies

Next, found the Network listing which shows the following :

1 Computer Acer 5517

1 Media Device  Also Acer 5517

1 Network Infrastructure  Intenet Gateway device

2 Printers

When I click the Media Device to see if it is mislabelling the Vortexbox, it only opens Windows Media player which then shows the Born To Run CD I had ripped to VB.  It does NOT show the other 2 CDs I ripped to VB.  What is really strange about this is I never downloaded that CD to the laptop, just the VB.  So how does it show up on W Media Player and where is the VB in all this?  This is what is so confusing, that the VB and my laptop seem to connect on some things, yet there is no trace of a connection or communication.  Same for why aren't the other 2 CDs I ripped showing up on the laptop?

Re: Squeezebox Transporter/Vortexbox setup for extreme Dummies

Again, you'll not find the VBA by searching in the laptop. the VBA is a server running on the same network as the laptop, but it is NOT part of your laptop.

The media device you are finding is not the VBA access. This is some sort of DLNA server that is running on the VBA (but this is not what you are trying to get to).  Windows Media Player is serving as a "client" of this DLNA server and that's why this pops up wanting to play the Springsteen songs. This is something that VB A can do, but this is NOT what you want (this is like a model T for playing music compared with the Logitech Music Player).

This is good though, because it means that the VBA is running.  I'm still trying to have you get to the basic VBA start up screen you saw before. I'm afraid you can't get it with 192.168.1.8 because maybe your IP address has changed (another reason I prefer a static IP for the VBA).

Try this in your laptop webbrowser:

http://vortexbox/

does this get you to the VBA?

Also, re: "windows explorer", click the start button, then enter "windows explorer" in the search box. Does this pull it up. It is part of windows.  It should have listings of: desktop, your user name, c:\, etc.  below all this is NETWORK.

Try this, install free network scanner from below on your laptop:

http://www.softperfect.com/products/networkscanner/

run this after it installs and it will show you the IP addresses of all things attached to your network. You should see one address that is probably your VBA.  Once you see this, you can use that IP address to access your VBA (it was 192.168.1.8 but now may be different)

Re: Squeezebox Transporter/Vortexbox setup for extreme Dummies

and on the network scanner, after installed, you may have to enter the scan to and from info. something like;

from:  192.168.1.1

to: 192.168.1.255

and once done, there is a "start scanning" button that then scans your network and starts listing things attached (your laptop, your router, etc.). On mine, my vortexbox shows up WITH THE VORTEXBOX LABEL.

Re: Squeezebox Transporter/Vortexbox setup for extreme Dummies

I haven't been looking for it on the laptop,, except when I go to Network as you suggested, and it isn't listed there anywhere.  I've pasted the links (both http vortexbox and the 192...etc)  on several web browsers (MSN, AOL, Yahoo, Firefox, Google) and get a search page for VB forum and Router links for the other.  This didn't happen yesterday, as I did use both of those to get to VB GUI, so I don't know why it doesn't work today.  I'll try this latest advice you offer and see what happens next.  Sorry, but I have been doing all you say, but there is still something out of whack here.

Re: Squeezebox Transporter/Vortexbox setup for extreme Dummies

OK, from the SoftPerfect Network scanner, I followed your instructions and the screen is as follows:  12 devices.

1) is router home    2) is my computer (Acer)  3-6) read new-host-#-home  #s 2-5  7) Blackberry 2  (strange since nobody here has a Blackberry  8-12)  IPSTB#.home  #1-5.

None are identified as VB, all but Blackberry have MAC address.  So trial and error to find which is the VB?  Plug in the IP address right down the line until I get the right one I suppose.  I'll give that a try.

Enetered all of them and only got the same search engine page for IP listings.

Re: Squeezebox Transporter/Vortexbox setup for extreme Dummies

when you say you enter the IP address as:

http://192.168.1.8/

or

http://vortexbox/

you are entering this in the webbrowser address window correct?  You mention yahoo, google, msn, etc. These are not browsers, these are search engines. So you don't search for the above addresses, you ENTER the address.  For example, in firefox browser, see the attached pic and the address of forums.logitech.... this is the place you enter the http:// address....
