I apologize in advance for my misunderstandings.
I've read elsewhere that the SB3 and Squeezebox controller provide native support for a limited number of codecs due to memory constraints (I own one of each of these).
It seems like it wouldn't be difficult to make the player firmware configurable in this respect -- allow the customer to choose which codecs get installed on the player. I'm sure most customers only need a small number of codecs, just not necessarily the ones currently installed.
In my case, I'd like native Apple Lossless support, but I've seen requests for other formats.
Is there any chance of something like this happening?

No. Both SB3 and Controller have been discontinued for a while, it's not as easy as you think, supporting per player customizable firmware & codecs would be a support nightmare. Never happen.
Besides, your LMS server will transcode Apple lossless to FLAC lossless which is native to the SB3. So why do you need native support of Apple on the player?

Oh well. Transcoding rarely rewinds or fast-forwards well. It also seems like transcoded material is more likely to pause in the middle.

I've never experienced such problems myself, but then I don't use Apple files so maybe that is the difference?
Are you running LMS on a full computer or a NAS (which might also explain your issues if running on an underpowered NAS).

this suggests that your computer running LMS is suffering under the load of transcodiing. Is it a very low power computer or NAS (like a readynas duo, etc.)

I'm not using a NAS. The computer isabout 8 years old.
I always assumed it was either the size of my library (~50,000 pieces) or more likely the length of the pieces (sometimes 20-30 minutes).

hmmm, could be the length, but that seems odd too if computer is powerful enough. I have about 70,000 FLAC files and don't see this. Then again, I'm not transcoding, because the FLAC is native to players.
