can anyone help with the shuffle mode on this unit? i can only set it to shuffle within an album. i would like to hit shuffle and play all songs from all albums from all artists randomly.

I think the random mix-songs will give you what you want. Just choose select all. It should then randomly play all your music. If you want to avoid certain music for example classsical, select all the other genres.  I often do this choosing just a few genres and it works just fine.
