The speakers work well on my PC, but the remote doesn't work at all though I installed the software and try the newest version online. None of the keys respond. What should I do to set the remote up? It seems not to be the problem of compatibility with win7 as it even doesn't work on XP. I just received it, can it due to the low power of the battery? Thank you.

I have the same problem. I've had the speakers about 2 months and everything worked fine until one day ago. Suddenly the remote quit working. I replaced the battery in the remote, but it didn't make a difference. Still doesn't work.
Running WIndows XP.
The only thing that has changed recently with my desktop is I bought a new wireless Microsoft 5000 keyboard and mouse, that communicates with a transceiver into a USB port on the computer. I've rebooted numerous times since this install, and the speakers have power each time. But I can't control them with the remote.

I just bought these yesterday and I have the same problem. The remote doesn't work. I installed the software from the CD and then went online to download the driver from this website. I'm using this on Windows XP. I haven't checked to see if it's the battery. I might return these to the store since the remote was a key buying factor.

Start > Run > services.msc
Search for "Human Interface Device Access" and click on it.
Change the startup type to "Automatic" and activate the service clicking on "Start" button.
Maybe this config changed when you installed your new keyboard. The remote works like the multimedia keys of a keyboard.
This worked for me

I had the same problem with the volume of remote not working on a computer running Windows 7.
I changed the startup type to "Automatic" in the Human Interface Device Access and and the volume began working. Following is a link describing how to access the Human Interface Device Access in Windows 7:

I was hoping your suggestion to changing the Human Interface Device to Automatic and Start would fix the problem. The HID is already set correctly (Automatic and Started). Unfortunately the problem still exists. The speakers work fine, but I have to use the keyboard volume up/down and unplug the USB when I don't want to use them. The remote still doesn't work.

Love the Z-5 speakers, hate the remote. It didn't work. Called USA support (Nova Scotia!) and they had no answer except to return the speakers and remote. Instead I persist.
I'm running Windows XP. Using Windows Media Player.
Checked the HID Access and it was already on Automatic and Start. Confirmed my preferred media program through the Start menu in addition to using the system tray icon.
Every time I turn on the computer I have to open WMP and press the music note on the remote. Then the remote works great on the speakers.
I'm not a techie. This reads like voodoo. But it is the only way to get my remote to work.

I found the solution.
I just bought the speakers and my remote did not work either (none of the controls responded).
I am running Vista.
The solution is to double click on the speaker Icon (volume control) in your system tray.
You should then see one thing called "name not available" that is muted.
Un-mute this and your remote should work.
