Re: Quick tips for posting video topics….

When posting as a new forum user, please start your own topic (in the correct forum).

The only reasons you should not do this are:
  • You have the EXACT same issue as the OP (Original Poster).
  • You are just commenting, or trying to help the OP with their issue.

This will save the Moderators time and effort in having to pull your post out into its own thread, and will get you a response more quickly.

Also - Please do not "double-post" your issues (this is frowned upon, and the repeat post will be removed).

Thanks.

Re: Quick tips for posting video topics….

[ Edited ]
When supplying information about your PC, what is most important to mention is the make/model number of the system chipset (integrated USB) or the make/model number of the USB chipset (add-in card).

If you don't know this information, please post the motherboard manufacturer/model number.

Failing that, just post the system manufacturer/model number.

Please DO NOT post something like this -

System:
Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

Computer:
Intel(R) Pentium 4 CPU 2.00 Ghz
768 MB RAM

This is really of no value to me when troubleshooting a problem. Most people today run this OS/SP level, and the CPU power/RAM content really have no bearing on most issues...unless things are running "slow" and you are "under spec" for the camera software requirements.

To correctly identify the installed version of Windows, please do the following -

Click Start -> Run -> Open: -> Type winver and hit Enter

Thanks.

Re: Quick tips for posting video topics….

[ Edited ]
Since the forum does not allow file attachments at this time, an alternate means of doing this needs to be discussed.

Here is the procedure for posting samples to the forum:

  1. Record a sample video/still image using QuickCam, and save it to your PC.
  2. Upload this file to your personal web or FTP space (check with your ISP for more information on this). *All* ISP's offer this service to their members. Please see Connection Information For Popular Internet Service Providers (below). This is the preferred method.
  3. If your ISP does not provide you with personal web or FTP space, you can upload your file to one of the free "file hosting" websites that are available on the Internet. If your ISP falls into this category, please mention them by name in your reply so that I can personally contact them concerning this issue.

         *NOTE* - This is NOT the preferred method, since many of these sites contain Ad-ware
                         and Spyware. Also...If the site requires "cookies", I will not download from
                         it. (Example "cookies" sites: http://www.putstuff.com or http://www.mediafire.com)

4.   Provide a (clickable) link to the sample in your follow-up post.
5.   Sample images may be embedded in your post, if the host site allows off-site linking. Please keep the
      image size reasonable (800x600 maximum).

Still Images:

You can use any of the free image hosting websites (Photobucket, ImageShack®, etc...) to host your sample still images.

Video Images:

You cannot use YouTube™, Photobucket, Yahoo!®, Amazon.com®, or similar websites to host your video samples. These websites are Flash-based, so the original video is not posted (it is converted to Flash...which will cover up the problems that you are trying to show).

You cannot use any website that provides "streaming" media (WMV).

The file must be downloadable to the local machine.

Other Samples:

Please follow the instructions beginning with Step 2.

Please do not host your files as HTML. The file must be downloadable to the local machine as ".log" or ".txt".

General:

Please do not use a "password protected" website or FTP space. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Please use a public ISP/website only. I will not download from your own personal "web server", and no...you cannot e-mail me your sample files (this will not allow other forum members to assist you). NO EXCEPTIONS!

Thanks.

Re: Quick tips for posting video topics….

[ Edited ]
Please post ALL CAMERA DETECTION ISSUES ( "USB device not recognized" ) to the Software forum...regardless of where Logitech is telling you to post them (Hardware forum).

Experience has shown that 99 44/100% of these issues are software related...and not hardware related.

Before posting a camera detection issue, please reference FAQ #535 and FAQ #305 if your system contains a KVM (Keyboard, Video, Mouse) switch, hub, port replicator, docking station, y-adapter, or other USB pass-through device.

Although not specifically stated, USB extension cables are included here as well.

IMPORTANT UPDATE -

If you have a QuickCam® Orbit, please verify that the "stick" is properly inserted. If it isn't, this can cause all sorts of problems...including camera detection issues.

Please also try the camera without the "stick" (it might have gone bad) before posting your issue to the forum.

Thanks.

Please reserve all entries to the Hardware forum for items associated with the physical camera hardware itself (the cable fell off, the button doesn't work, I can't get the mounting clip off, etc...).

If your question is technical/engineering related (what camera controller chip do they use, who makes the CMOS sensor, etc...), you should post it to the Hardware forum as well.

General information about the camera hardware (is the image quality of this model camera better than this one, etc...) should be posted to the Webcam - General Discussion forum.

Thanks.

Re: Quick tips for posting video topics….

[ Edited ]
The Windows setupapi.log can provide vital information about your QuickCam installation.

This file can be found in C:\%windir%\setupapi.log, where %windir% is C:\WINNT for W2K, and C:\WINDOWS for WinXP.

Please post this file (using the instructions provided above beginning with step #2) for ALL CAMERA DETECTION ISSUES when requested.

Please DO NOT POST THE LOG AS TEXT TO THE FORUM...only post it as a downloadable link (see "procedure for posting samples to the forum" above). I cannot...and will not process it any other way. If you do post the log file to the forum, I will ask the Forum Moderators to remove it. NO EXCEPTIONS!!!

Please make sure that any "word wrap" feature is turned off for the file you are posting.

Thanks.

For more information about the setupapi log file in W2K and WinXP, please see the following Microsoft articles.

Information on the log files created for Windows Vista can be found here.

If you receive an error code, please state the EXACT and COMPLETE error code that shows on your screen. You may post a screen image of the error if this is easier for you to do so.

Also please state if it is a Windows error code (BSOD), or a Logitech one.

Please do not post a Dr. Watson log entry unless you are asked to do so.

Thanks.

Re: Quick tips for posting video topics….

[ Edited ]
For ALL Sound/Camera Microphone Related Issues -

Please see these FAQ for all "surround sound" (5.1/7.1) and Logitech AEC related issues.

This includes *all* AC '97 audio systems (RealTek, Avance, SigmaTel, etc...).

Please note that for QuickCam 10.5.1.2029, an AEC Removal tool is available (Ref: FAQ #5336).

For QuickCam 11.8.0.1065, the Logitech AEC component has been removed. The user can only choose to select/enable Noise Suppression (Ref:FAQ #6797).

Windows XP (and later OS) also contains an AEC component. More information about this feature can be found here.

A Wikipedia® article on AEC can be found here.

Thanks.

From FAQ #5271 -

"This specific issue is related to Logitech’s RightSound Technology. RightSound Technology was designed to improve the audio communication experience and is not optimized for multi-channel audio, games or any advanced audio usage. To provide advanced communications capabilities such as “Echo Cancellation” it has to restrict the way certain audio features are used.

When the AEC feature of QuickCam and supported cameras is enabled, the audio output may be restricted causing some channels to be disabled. This issue is known to effect specific Sound Blaster devices and may also be apparent when other multi-channel audio devices are used in conjunction with Logitech’s RightSound or “AEC” feature.

Logitech recognizes this issue as being expected behavior and recommends that AEC be disabled when multi-channel audio is required."

BSOD's (Blue Screen of Death)

If you are getting a BSOD, please state the BSOD that you receive.

For example -

STOP: 0x00000000 (0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

To get this information, check the Event Viewer (MS KB #308427), or set Windows to "Halt on BSOD" (if your system reboots instead of halts). See MS KB #320299 for more information on how to set this up.

For more information on BSOD's, please see the following Microsoft Website:

Thanks.

Older Software

To get older versions of the Logitech software, please visit the Logitech FTP website.

Once there, browse around until you find what you are looking for.

The currently available versions of the QuickCam software can be found by following this link -> ftp://ftp.logitech.com/pub/techsupport/quickcam/.

Format:

qcxxxxlll.exe (isxxxxlll.exe, qcxxxxlll_x64.exe, qcxxxxlll_full.exe)

where -

qc = QuickCam
is = ImageStudio
xxxx = version (32-bit)
lll = localized version string
exe = executable

_x64 = denotes the 64-bit Installer
_full = denotes the combined 32-bit and 64-bit Installers rolled into one
_logicool = Japanese version of the software (http://www.logicool.co.jp)

Localized Version Strings -

enu -> English
esp -> Espanol (Spanish)
fra -> Francais (French)
deu -> Deutsch (German)
ita -> Italiano (Italian)
jpn -> Japanese
sve -> Svenska (Swedish)
nld -> Nederlands (Dutch/Netherlands)
nor -> Norsk (Norwegian)
dan -> Dansk (Danish)
ptb -> Portuguese
kor -> Korean
chs -> Chinese Simplified
cht -> Chinese Traditional

Example:

You are looking for QuickCam 8.4.8 (English).

Format: qcxxxxlll.exe

qc = QuickCam
xxxx = 848
lll = enu
exe = executable

The filename to search for would then be qc848enu.exe.

Thanks.

Re: Quick tips for posting video topics….

[ Edited ]
I have been noticing a trend lately that OP's are re-titling threads that are already in progress.

Even though the option is there to do so, PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS as it confuses the continuity of the tread (and probably the search engine as well).

If you feel the need to re-title, just start your own thread instead.

In addition, please do not edit your initial title to include the words "Solved", "Fixed", "Resolved", etc... when you are done posting. This only serves to confuse others when they are looking for a "solution" to their problem. Even though this practice is common on other forums, and that you may consider the issue "complete", I would ask that you reserve these words for Logitech's use only (e.g.: when an "official fix" is released).

Thanks.
