Webcam - General Discussion

As a new bee I have a great many questions, I'm basically PC Illiterate, but I do have some ideas for how I would like to use the web cam, I just don't no if it can perform, or if any web cam can do what I'm looking for.

Anybody that has an understanding of W'Cs will probably realize this thread title is a little broad, maybe it can be narrowed by listing the models you are fluent with or basic uses and the models that can perform these tasks. One of the other threads commented on a W'C' being used for security purposes activated by motion, I didn't even know this could be done.

Do you need a special kind of W'C' to perform security tasks, would it need anything special to have it activated by motion?

How many W'C's could you run in the above mentioned, task, can you have more than one room being watched?

Another thread mentioned different W'C's have zooms and higher level of quality, what kind of price range are these in, what models are recommended?

Thank you for the links, I followed the video for Motion Detection, I clicked on the video options where you are to enable the M'D' but on my screen there wasn't one. I followed all the instructions but is seems that my W'C' doesn't support MD. Is there a setting or part of the installation I'm missing? Help would be appreciated.

1) What is the 8xxxxx (or 860-xxxxxx) series number from the camera tag (FAQ #3427), or preferably...the USB\VID ID?

2) Which version of the Logitech supplied QuickCam software application/drivers is installed (FAQ #5105)?

3) What Operating System (OS) is installed?

The information I saw was kind of like reading a different language, there is a silver lineing to this cloud, the projects I was planning to use the WC for, a good friend is going to help me out. He runs a PC repair store, he told me for the security system he can get cameras that will zoom, tilt, manuverable..... I'm not ready to set up but he said he would hook me up when ever.

My buddie told me the camera he has in his store was about $300, but he said he can control it from his house, zoom tilt turn 360. He aparently has  some site he visits which lets him access it all. This all sounds like star trek stuff to me.....

Does this sound right to you or am I being fed a line because I don't know any better?

I looked at the link, those cameras are fantastic, I didn't notice any that zoomed or turn. It is more of a "just so I know" the ones on the link will almost certainly do. Thank you
