Multiple Webcams - Duplicate Device

I have multiple Logitech Quick Cam Pro 3000's. I would like to use them for a surveillance system. I can plug in the first one and it works just fine. When I plug in the second camera, Windows XP gives me a blue screen of death and reboots. Then, when it restarts, I go to the device manager and it shows one properly configured camera and another with the yellow exclamation point with a message saying "there is a duplicate device already running on the system".

After browsing a few user groups it appears that the widely accepted solution to this problem is either (do a Google groups search, this is a very common question):
a) Use a camera that is a different model or from another manufacturer or;
b) Find a manufacturer that has drivers that support multiple camera's (the only known web cam that does this is apparently discontinued).

Could someone confirm that what I have been reading is true...do I really have to get a different make/model camera to simply have two camera's working? DoesLogitech offer a muticamera driver? Or is there a simple edit I can make somewhere to enable this?

Thanks for your time!
Jeremy

Re: Multiple Webcams - Duplicate Device

Welcome to the New Logitech Community Webcam Forum Jeremy! :smileyhappy:

This is correct...multiple cameras are not supported in QuickCam...unless you can run one under QuickCam and another under ImageStudio.

Your system should actually come up and say QCP 3000 #2, etc... and not crash.

Did you plug the camera into a separate USB Controller, or into the one that the first 3000 was already on?

Re: Multiple Webcams - Duplicate Device

Thanks Kachi,

I'm not much of an expert when it comes to USB controllers, etc. I'm not sure whether it is on a seperate controller or not. One cam is plugged into a USB port on the back, and the other on a USB port in front. I tried switching them around a bit but Windows is still complaining about "duplicate devices". If I were to purchase a seperate controller (i.e. a PCI USB card) would this do the trick?

Thanks,
Jeremy

Re: Multiple Webcams - Duplicate Device

You can see who is plugged in where by looking in the Device Manager and setting the view to "by connection".

An add-in card would give you more Controllers...if that becomes necessary.

Re: Multiple Webcams - Duplicate Device

Thanks...Using the method of displaying hardware by connection, the device manager indicates the USB port on front and back are indeed separate controllers. This would indicate that even when using a separate USB controller Windows still cannot distinguish between the two camera's.
