C920 sound problems

I've started using the C920 (was using C910).

I mostly like it, but the audio always has an annoying high pitch tone in the background.

It's not terribly loud but it still annoys many folks. Is that true for all C920's? Is there a fix?

Also, when I set focus near infinity I got a chattering sound. A high speed clicking.

Took a while to figure it out, but when I moved focus one click towards close-up, it disappeared.

It's not repeatable. Again, is this with all C920's or did I get a lemon?

Thanks, Joe

Hello Pungh0Li0,

The issues described in your post may be system specific. If possible, please test your C920 on a different computer to determine if you are experiencing a hardware problem.

I won't be able to do that until my hummer chicks leave

Was using a c910 before this without issue.

Thanks, Joe

Re: C920 sound problems

An example of the noise is here:

There is some lower freeway noise but you should hear it fine.

Re: C920 sound problems

The sound I hear is definitely related to the focus mechanism.

If I take the focus to infinity the sound disappears.

As soon as I change the focus the tone returns.

Anywhere but infinity gives me the noise.

I also frequently get the clacking sound as it is changing focus.

Re: C920 sound problems

Just a quick update. I took the camera down and hooked it up to my desktop computer.

If I hold the camera next to my ear the noise is very clear.

Plus, changing focus causes the chattering sound which sometimes will continue nonstop.

Seems like a serious problem with the focus mechanism.

I will be very nervous to buy another until I'm sure it isn't a problem with the design of the C920.

Re: C920 sound problems

Ok, I bought a 2nd camera hoping my first was a lemon, but this camera has terrible focus noise too.

The constant high pitch noise seems much better.

But there is a constant mechanical grinding/rattle sound at certain focus settings.
There will be 3 or 4 focus positions where is really bad and others are fine.
If you tilt the camera angle up or down it may reduce or increase the sound but also make it appear at other focus settings.

Sample audio -> http://phoebeallens.com/audio/chatter.mp3

So 2 out of 2 cameras have this problem? I mean come on!
I'm definitely returning this one.
