Welcome to the new Logitech Webcam Forum erikbeard! ![]()
Are you using QuickCam 8.4.8?
You *may* run into an issue with the ATL71.DLL file being the wrong type (Unicode/ANSI)...is this what you are seeing?

That is the only issue that I'm aware of.
Is your ME fully updated, and are you running DirectX 9.c?
Can you post some more information about your "older" PC?

I'm getting the same error even with the latest directx installed.
Towards the end of the install it pops up that error and then the rest of the install (and my computer) hangs and I have to reboot.
From here I have to reset my computer to get it to work again. After it reboots I still see the error popping up from time to time, but I can just close it and still get around OK.
If I just rename or delete this file, then the computer seems to run OK and I can use the webcam with MSN messenger. But if I try to run the install again to get the rest of the install to finish properly, it just copies the unicode atl71.dll back and causes the error again.
Is there any trusted place to download the ansi version of this dll? Anything from logitech?
By the way, I tried it on win98 SE and get the same error too.

Win9x should have no issues...version of QuickCam that you have installed?
What is the EXACT error message that you see...one for atl71.dll?
Logitech has not posted the correct file to its database or updated their installer.
IMO, they should.
There were posts in the "old" forum that had links to the correct file version from reliable sources...check there for more info.

I'm going to dig around for a bit to find the correct dll and maybe then I can continue through the rest of the install.

Just a little followup to my own post in case someone else runs into this - or in case logitech support reads these forums ![]()
I got the ANSI version of atl71.dll off the Visual Studio 2003 DVD, copied it over the top of the wrong one on my system, marked it Read Only, then re-ran the entire logitec setup. This time, the setup finished properly. Then I rebooted the machine at the end like the setup asked. After the reboot finished, I got the same old error again about the wrong atl71.dll. I checked the file and the unicode one was back in it's place again. Then I just copied the correct one over the top again, and then finally it worked.
Now I'm able to use the camera just fine on my ME box.
