Win 7x64 / QuickCam Orbit AF / usb extension / motion activated capture?

Hah, I know that's a lot in one go.  I do not have any of the camera bits yet, because I wanted to check in with knowledgeable folks on whether or not this seems feasible.

Looking at this specific camera, I would guess it's the current vintage? No way to get you the specific model code, as it's not purchased yet.

I'm hoping that it comes with software that is capable of recording to a local hard disk if it detects motion.

I am running Windows 7 x64 ultimate (the RTM code, 6.1.7600) and it looks like from other threads folks are having some luck with Win7 by following specific install steps, or perhaps copy steps might be more accurate.

I am planning to extend it using a usb over cat5 type extender to allow me to monitor a nearby room at home when I'm away. I really don't need to view it over the internet, but would like to record if motion is detected.  Niot sure how accurate the motion detection is, but the audio recording would sure be a bonus.

I'm also not sure that if the included software (lws100_x64.exe or qc1180_x64.exe) does support motion based capture, if it might support more than one usb attached camera.  I would be envisioning a maximum of three cameras, hooked up to their own USB master ports on a reasonably stout home machine (i7, 12g ram, raid 10 arrays).

Frankly, most of the IP "security" cameras just don't look very good to me, either in perform or within a semi-reasonable price.  The stats and reviews of the Orbit AF look stellar, so I'd prefer to use that model :smileywink:

Pointers and thoughts appreciated, thank you.

Re: Win 7x64 / QuickCam Orbit AF / usb extension / motion activated capture?

Thanks for the popular welcome, took me a bit to get through all of those but worth it.

Looks like I may be into thrid party sw to get motion detection w/ audio capture; bah  :robotindifferent:

I was hoping for integrated; if anyone has any suggestions on software I'd be all listening.  Bonus point for supporting up to 3 cameras :smileywink:

I think I will plunk down for one camera and extender and see how things go; I doubt I'll get full res at 30 fps over the extender, but the run is fairly short so we'll see.

Depending on how that goes, I will see about moving further into this.  If it doesn't work at all over the extender at least I can repurpose it.

Will report back once I see, thanks for the useful URL references; I knew you'd have them handy, hah.  Multi-source for the win . . .

Will do; I've used their contact form, and referenced this thread.  As well, will report back on how the hardware combination works once I order and test it out.

Re: Win 7x64 / QuickCam Orbit AF / usb extension / motion activated capture?

Just getting back to this. Have downloaded the software from http://www.webcamxp.com/ - specifically, Webcam 7.

It looks to be great work, and they have a detailed list of supported cameras at http://www.webcamxp.com/ipcams.aspx

I referenced this thread since it had a good idea of what I was looking for. While my Orbit AF idea was not listed in their supported list, they contacted me back and said :

Hello,

webcam 7 is intended for such purposes however Logitech drivers aren't much suitable to use more than one of those camera at the same time. If you use only one sphere then there is no problem (drivers 11.5 suggested to be able to use all available resolutions).

Regards

Steve

I understand this generally to mean that I'm probably not going to plop 6 cameras on there at 2 megapixel, hah. Understandable.

I've ordered an Orbit AF as well as a new access point / router and an (unnamed other company wireless cam) to test out with the software above; I'll report back on how it goes with multiple cams.  Thanks!
