So I have a Duet now but I still have an original SLIMP3, is there a patch or something that allows the server to see the SLIMP3 device as a player or do I have to keep around the older version of squeezebox to support this player?

The older players will show up and can be played in the current SBS. IIRC there are a few of the new features that do not trickle down to this older player. Again if memory holds, S.o.X. support is not available for the SliMP3 units.
But the good thing is that all versions of SS, SC, SBS support playing and controlling of the SliMP3.
