Xbox / Xbox 360 (READ ONLY ARCHIVE)

I've had my G35 for about 4 months and really enjoy being able to crank it up at night.  I'm also a 360 gamer and I've been using the analog line outs from the xbox to my PC.  This gives ok stereo from the 360 but what I really want is a way to do surround sound from the 360.

Has anyone been able to connect their 360's optical to a PC audio card's optical inputs and get surround sound from the 360?  It seems like this would work, but I don't want to waste the $$$ on a new card and get the same result I currently have.  I'm running windows 7.
