What Logitech are saying is sort of correct - this device is designed to switch itself off after a few minutes of 'no signal'

If you use a very low output from your source mp3 device then the unit may think there is no signal and switch itself off.

By setting your source device to a higher output the PFA2 will be less likely to switch itself off where there is a quiet passage of music etc.

The problem is that IMHO Logitech have made an error with the design by making it too sensitive to 'no signal' conditions.

What they need to do is make the unit less sensitive to 'no signal' and perhaps extending the time-out period.

The big problem is that non of the current units can be fixed as there is no way to send a firmware update or fix, so Logitech will continue to maintain their stance that the unit works as designed....

I'm usually use to other brand then Logitech, but since it's the only "Iphone" compatible speaker they had at FutureShop, I bought it. I was surprised by the excellent quality of the sound coming out of this little box... Oops... Speakers stop working in middle of a song... Ok, Reset, Not workin, Reset again... Oh it's working again... Then stops again.  I change for another speaker of the same model. Again it fails. Then I found this site and the 75% volume rule... Ok, it's a litlle work around I'm willing to try. After a while, I can say it is not acceptable as a solution... For example, the very popular Last.fm app on iphone, replace volume at 50% after every sound. Oh wait, so funny as I'm writing this, the speaker just stopped. Output at 100% on the Iphone. To the Support Agent writing in this thread, stop saying it the other devices that are faulty. The speaker is an accessory to a device not the opposite. MP3 players are not supposed to be build to work with your speakers, you're supposed to build speakers that works with MP3 players. Not as if Iphone would be a 9,99$ made in china MP3 Player.

Good thing I bought the extended service warranty. I'm now waiting for another company to come out with an Iphone compatible speaker so I can return and exchange mine.

I have just purchased the PFA2 speakers to use with my Macbook via the Aux input.

I was very disappointed to discover this design flaw the first day I used the speakers, as they sound fantastic.  I am able to avoid the shut-offs using the previously suggested remedy of keeping the computer/media player volume above 75% and use the remote to change vol.  It really is unacceptable that the user should be forced to use the remote to change volume (in order to leave the computer volume above 75%), as I (for example) have vol controls built in to my wireless keyboard and it is much more convenient to use those than to rummage around on my desk to find the remote. 

In the Troubleshooting section of the manual (Page 5 in the English section) it states:

If the speakers randomly turn off: 

- To preserve battery life, when the speakers are running on battery power, they will automatically turn off if there is no music for 2 minutes.

This shows us that this is in fact a 'feature' that Logitech have designed.  However, my unit still turns off even when I have them plugged in to AC power (which is 99% of the time as I use them as desktop speakers).  Can Logitech tell me if in fact the speakers are supposed to turn off after 2 minutes even when plugged in to AC power.  If so, this is a completely useless feature that needs to be fixed in future revisions.  This feature should automatically be disabled when the unit is plugged into an AC socket.  Also, saying in the manual that it only turns off 'when running on battery power' is not a true representation of the actual design of the product.

I am also glad that I payed for the extended replacement warranty...let's hope this feature is fixed in the next version of these otherwise very good speakers!

I have the PureFi Anywhere (v. 1) and its particular about the source audio being at a certain level. This means that I can't listen to anything quiet, any quiet, introspective music, or videos which have lots of silence, like a good noir. I can see how the powersaver function works, but it shouldn't be enabled when the unit is plugged in. This is the true flaw. I truly do love these speakers as they are the best in their class, but it only works when you listen to loud music. Its a real shame.

... this is common design choice, if the input level threshold is too low it will mistaken noise for signal and stay on - and thus the manufacturer would have complaints about the battery running down becuase the unit didn't time out.  i foud that if you simply turn the volume of the input device to better than half then the unit will say on ;}

p.s. : this does't mean that you have to listen to loud music - just tunr down the logitech volume control. its the input circuit that senses if a device is present, the output volume can be turned down as much as you like.

I accept the logic of having this feature when the unit is running on battery power, but not when plugged into the wall. Once it is plugged in to the AC power the feature should be disabled.

As for keeping the volume down on the speakers while the gain remains high on the source, that doesn't generally work. It seems that the detection circuit also takes the output audio into account when determining if it should auto sleep. This is clearly a flaw. 

Since I use these speakers as my desk audio, I have switched to an Avocado green SpeckTone Retro set, which also has phenomenal sound quality, though not quite as good as the PureFi

...if you can't turn the output vol down then you must have a seperate issue.  the circuits run on conditioned dc and don't know if  the battery charger (dc in) is pluged in,,,a note to this issue in the documention is whats needed - my unit works just fine and is a great value, in fact i bought a second after giving my first to my daughter.

I am glad that you are enjoying your PureFi devices. I am, too, with exception to these smallish issues that many of us posting in the thread are having. I submit that you have purchased revisions of the products different than the ones which the other forum users own.

The fault in the design, it can happen once in a while. The Logitech reaction (its a design fault of the input device) is the real fault. Its a shame how Logitech treats the payers of their salary. I wil never buy a Logitech device again. Which is a pitty, the sound is ok. When it works.

Saving battery life? If its in an AC outlet? Can you imagine? come on, you can do better
