Anyone with suggestions, thaks in advance. I am gathering info on this technology
1. What can the IO toolkit SDK do that a 3rd party software can't?
Am confused as to why I would have to pick one over the other.
For example I wish to create a form, print it on digital paper, use a digital pen to write on it,
transfer the pen data to the computer and presumably, this updates the same electronic form in the computer.
Important thing here would be to have NO translation take place. i.e. Raw data transferred to i.e. a pdf file.
The XPaper solution seems to address this. Their idea of printing an existing form onto digital paper seems to make a lot of sense. I am unsure where the Anoto licencing comes into play here?
Or anywhere along the dev line of this technology in general.
2. Is this technology able to differentiate many personalized digital paper forms to their equivalent eletronic versions? How is this link made?
Thanks.

1) You need ANOTO SDK(Software Development Kit) - To develop custom application which detect custom forms using PAD(Paper Application Definition) file.
You need ANOTO FDT (Form Design Tool) - To design custom forms (Convert to digital forms) using ANOTO Pattern License; which gives PAD file and PS(Post Script with ANOTO Pattern) file (For printing) purpose as output.
2) Answer to your question number two is "YES".
I hope this helps

1. Is this a case of I "have" to use the Anoto SDK and the FDT ? That is, Anoto is the only method?
Are there other options?
2. According to Talario and Xpaper, forms can be printed to Anoto paper using their system - implying that the fdt sdk etc are not needed.

1) Yes, ANOTO is the only method.
2) XPaper Talario- Provide Pre Printed papers with blank ANOTO pattern and you need to use those papers to print your custom form on that paper, and then need to use digital pen to write on those forms printed on ANOTO pattern page.

OK am getting a better grasp on the technical part but..
1. So there's no "off-the-shelf" digital paper that has the Anoto pattern?
We create this with the sdk and print it onto capable paper?
Is that what that thread about where everyone was asking u to send them a pdf to create their own digital paper?
2. If off the shelf paper exists, then why do vendors like xpaper (or living paper?)try to sell me digital paper? What are they actually selling me ? SDK license?
And if they're primarily selling me sdk license, then what's the difference? Anoto license is an Anoto license ?
What's the value add?

1) Yes. It was just paper with pattern for testing purpose.

2) Shelf Paper with ANOTO pattern is developed by service provider like Living Paper and Talario using ANOTO License. They are selling their service to make your custom form digital(Form with ANOTO pattern) and integrate with database or other application.
Value add, making custom form digital, doing ICR(Intelligent Character Recognition), integrating with database for report purpose...etc..

so let me get this straight. Sorry to drag on, but I think my needs are simple and I was hoping it wouldn't require much. It seems horribly expensive and complicated to do a simple thing!
Right now I am faxing paper orders. They are hand written orders on plain paper, with a few fields, item, quantity, etc. and a signature. Nothing fancy.
I wish to replace the act OF:
walking to the fax machine and sending it manually
WITH:
writing on digital paper, docking the pen and having a fax program on the pc do it for me. Maybe I have to click "send" on the fax app - something simple like that.
1. You are saying that I can't (cannot) just buy digital paper, put it in my printer, print my simple fax form to it, the same that I use for manual faxing (assuming I have made the form already in Word, pdf or whatever) and expect this to work WITHOUT a HUGE licensing fee?
2. We are talking a simple image here printed to digital paper that will be hand written to. Very simple.
It doesn't matter if the hand writing is a little above or below a line. Its not that exact in my case!
3. Then why does Logitech sell me the pen with a couple of Anoto paper booklets of blank paper if I can't do this?
What good is it?
4. What exactly CAN I do with this without some expensive license ?
5. At what point do I have to use a commercial pen, Anoto license etc?
6. IF the form may require a special required field or i.e "Send as Fax" field or similar. IS THAT what constitutes a special form and pattern and THEN a license?
7. IF the form DOES NOT contain or require any special fields, just plain hand written, no text conversion, then can I do this with a logitech pen and associated software off the shelf WITHOUT the Anoto license?
Thanks.

This can be done using DPP (Digital Pen and Paper) concept. As simple as you explained; Once you dock the pen after filling up your custom form it will FAX the document(digital copy) using windows FAX service.
1) Contact Living Paper and I don’t think it is going to cost you more. Go for Image Only or Image Only+ FAX as per your requirement.
2) Digital Image will be mirror image of your physical form with pen strokes
3) Anoto Books are just line ruled note books and we are talking about your custom form with fields + Fax
4) You need to contact service provide such as Living Paper to develop your custom form
5) If you develop your custom form with ANOTO service provide you need to use Commercial pen (available with Living Paper also) ANOTO license talk with representative of service provider.
6) Yes that is custom special form as per your requirement.
7) Yes, you can use Notebooks that you will get with Logitech IO2 pen.
hope this helps.
